Mavis first started on her path to stardom when she was awarded the titles of Miss Photogenic and Miss Amity in Singapore's Miss Chinatown Pageant in 1992.
A former student of East Payoh Secondary school, Mavis took part in an island-wide search for singing talents and was selected by music director Chen Jiaming. Then she left her job as a photographer's assistant to become a singer.
