has come a long way since her early days as an actress. From playing vacuous, decorative "flower-vases" (hua ping) roles, she has progressed to become a darling amongst the vanguard of Chinese filmmakers.
our years ago, she even starred as herself in prominent French director Olivier Assayas' homage to her, Irma Vep.
So when Maggie lashes out about the sorry state of Hong Kong cinema, we sit up and listen.
The target of her venom: Wong Jing, the infamous director-producer of Category III skin flicks and other lowbrow faves like God of Gamblers.
"If his low-class stunts like cake-throwing and car-crashing reflect the state of Hong Kong movies, then the Hong Kong movie industry is doomed," she railed.
In tears when speaking to the press, Maggie confided that she was distressed to find that Wong had exploited her hot-and-heavy film romance with co-star Leon Lai in tabloids and magazines as a cheap publicity gimmick for her latest Hong Kong movie, tentatively titled Sausalito (or Love at First Sight). Such sensationalism ignored the hard work the leads put in and trivialized the movie, she said. Later, Maggie was nowhere to be seen at a press conference for Sausalito. Wong, however, had a glib excuse at hand: he said the conference was held for Leon Lai's theme song for the film, and that Maggie's presence would have been distracting.
Maggie a distraction? Not unless you consider her blinding beauty and undeniable talent beside the point. Dear Wong Jing, Leon Lai's song isn't going to be the highlight of your movie... E-online
