2004-07-10
BRISBANE, Australia - Australian swimmer Leisel Jones set a world record in the 200-meter breaststroke Saturday at a grand prix meet with a time of 2 minutes, 22.96 seconds.Jones' time beat the previous world record of 2:22.99 held by Qi Hui of China, set in August 2001 in Hagzhou, China, and equaled by American Amanda Beard at the Barcelona world championships last July. Jones, a member of the Olympic team for Athens, also holds the 100-meter breaststroke mark of 1:06.37 set in Barcelona last year. The 18-year-old Jones was surprised after her world record swim, logged during a week of heavy training. ``That's quite a shock,'' she said. ``We're in stacks of training. I can't begin to explain to you how much hard training we've been doing.''
