Maggie Cheung to divorce French husband

HONG KONG - Acclaimed Hong Kong film star Maggie Cheung is divorcing her French husband, director Olivier Assayas, according to her publicity agency on Saturday.Cheung, 37, said in a news release issued by Jettone Films Ltd., that she and Assayas have begun divorce proceedings, AP reported. Assayas directed Cheung in her first international movie, ``Irma Vep'' in 1996. They were married in 1998. ``The few years that I have spent with Olivier are an important phase in my life and have brought me many memories to cherish,'' Cheung was quoted as saying in the release. ``Unfortunately, we are both absorbed in our work. After careful discussion, we think it's not suitable to live together anymore,'' Cheung wrote. Cheung, who was born in Hong Kong but raised in Britain, is one of the most recognizable faces in Hong Kong cinema. She was the first Chinese star to win the Silver Bear Award for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1992 for the movie ``Actress'' in which she played the role of a tragic Chinese actress. Her best-known movies include ``In the Mood for Love'' - released in the United States last year.
