HK to Aid Development of High-tech Film Industry
1998-10-09
Hong Kong - In his policy address on Wednesday, Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa announced a $100 million Film Development Fund to stimulate the industry, special effects technology and skills. Tung says movies with computer-generated special effects have done well recently, citing the locally produced The StormRiders as an example. As soon as comedian Stephen Chow heard the news, he said this would go a long way in helping make the film industry vibrant again. He likens the sector to that of tourism in the way it contributes to the economy. The comedian said it is very good news that the government has once again shown its support for the film sector. Actress Kristy Chung says that with the new millennium approaching, Hong Kong movies must use computers to improve production quality. She says that with bigger budget, higher quality movies will be possible and that she was happy with Mr Tung's decision. Singer Gigi Leung says Hong Kong's economy isn't good at the moment, so if there are more movies then less people will be out of work.
