Jiang Wen Quit from Chen Kaige Film
1997-09-23
Beijing - Director Chen Kaige's next film, "Assassin," has run into a bit of trouble after the departure of leading actor Jiang Wen. Reportedly, Jiang and Chen had a verbal clash on the set in which harsh words were exchanged, authough official explanation is that Jiang and the film's producer were unable to resolve contract discrepancies. Jiang was replaced by Zhang Fengyi (from Chen's Farewell My Concubine). But the loss of him just days before shooting of the film began in Beijing sent the project into a panic. The film, in pre-production for a year, was scheduled to complete shooting within six months. Sony Pictures Classics has the foreign distribution rights to the film. Jiang has earned a reputation in recent years as an actor with an attitude, Reuter said. He has recently starred in Zhang Yimou's Keep Cool, which was shown in Venice International Film Festival.
