"Hong Kong Heat" stars to sweep U.S.

Starz Encore's Action Channel will present the second year of "Hong Kong Heat," a special summer package of cutting-edge Asian action movies, premiering every Friday night at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) beginning June 1 and running through August.The pace is fast and furious, and this year's collection of "Hong Kong Heat" offers some of the best action films available: from John Woo's classic "A Better Tomorrow" (starring Chow Yun-Fat) to Tsui Hark's inspirational "Zu, Warriors From the Magic Mountain." Several films make their television premieres this summer including "The Bride With White Hair II," to be shown along with the acclaimed original; and a spotlight on Jet Li in August, with six action-packed films including "Fist of Legend," "The Defender," and "Twin Warriors." JUNE (all times ET/PT) THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR II (1993) - June 22, 10:00 p.m.-- The saga continues! Powerful, insane and obsessed with hatred, the Bride (Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia) can only be stopped by the one person she loves (Leslie Cheung). Television premiere. ZU, WARRIORS FROM THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN (1983) - June 29, 10:00 p.m.-- Tsui Hark directed this martial arts spectacle-fantasy. Sammo Hung (TV's "Martial Law") costars with Adam Cheng ("Seven Warriors"), Yuen Biao ("Shanghai Noon"), and Brigitte Lin ("The Bride With White Hair"). JULY A BETTER TOMORROW (1986) - July 6, 10:00 p.m.-- Chow Yun-Fat picked up a Best Actor award (Hong Kong) for his portrayal of a mob hitman out to even the score with a mob boss who double-crossed him. Directed by John Woo. THE HEROIC TRIO (1993) - July 13, 10:00 p.m.-- The film features the talents of three of Asia's top female actresses; Michelle Yeoh ("Tomorrow Never Dies"), Maggie Cheung ("Ashes of Time"), and Anita Mui ("Rouge") in this surreal adventure story. EXECUTIONERS (1994) - July 20, 10:00 p.m.-- The "Heroic Trio" returns with Mui, Cheung and Yeoh, in pursuit of the Black Knight, a madman who threatens to destroy the water supply following a nuclear holocaust. LAST HURRAH FOR CHIVALRY (1978) - July 27, 10:00 p.m.-- John Woo wrote and directed this samurai era tale of revenge and honor, starring Wei Pai (the snake of "5 Deadly Venoms") and Damian Lau ("Best of the Best," "The Heroic Trio"). AUGUST IS JET LI MONTH ON ACTION THE LEGEND (1993) & THE LEGEND II (1993) - August 3, 10:00 p.m. -- Action packed doubleheader features Jet Li as folk hero, Fong Sai Yuk, who becomes involved with a secret brotherhood intent on overthrowing the Manchurian Emperor. In part two, he must woo the daughter of a government official who has a sacred box containing valuable information. TWIN WARRIORS (1993) - August 10, 10:00 p.m. -- Directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, Li plays a Shaolin monk who is expelled from the temple and seeks revenge against a former bullying friend who betrays and frames him. Michelle Yeoh costars along with Siu-hou Chin ("Fist of Legend," "Mr. Vampire"). THE DEFENDER (1994) - August 17, 10:00 p.m.-- Jet Li stars as a bodyguard who is hired to protect a beautiful woman (Christy Chung, "Tai Chi 2," "The Bride With White Hair II") after she witnesses a murder. Directed by Corey Yuen ("Jet Li's The Enforcer").Television premiere. JET LI'S THE ENFORCER (1995) - August 24, 10:00 p.m.-- Jet Li stars as an undercover agent who infiltrates a Hong Kong gang. FIST OF LEGEND (1994) - August 31, 10:00 p.m.-- A tribute to Bruce Lee's 1972 "Fists of Fury," Li is the famous Chinese folk hero, Chen Zhen, a martial artist who returns to Shanghai during WWII to avenge his teacher's death. Directed by Yuen Woo-Ping (action choreographer for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "The Matrix").
