MTV Asia honors Anita Mui with Inspiration Award

SINGAPORE - Asian divas swept much of the field at the MTV Asia Awards while Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh paid a touching tribute to the late Hong Kong singer Anita Mui, bringing a somber moment to an otherwise rowdy Valentine's Day ceremony.

``We're very fortunate that she touched the world in so many ways,'' said Yeoh, who received Mui's posthumous Inspiration Award on the late singer's behalf on Saturday. Mui died last year after of cervical cancer. ``Her legacy will live on with us,'' Yeoh said.

Asian female singers won many of the night's awards, with Hong Kong's Sammi Cheng, Malaysia's Siti Nurhaliza and Singapore's Stefanie Sun each earning the top Favorite Artist Award from voters in their home countries for the third year in a row.

In keeping with a romantic Valentine's Day theme, this year's trophies depicted Cupids.

Performances by the U.S. rap group Black Eyed Peas and Korean pop diva BoA brought the 7,000-strong crowd of mostly teenage girls to its feet. This is the third year Singapore has hosted the awards show, held in the city-state's Indoor Stadium.

British boy band Blue and Russian pop duo Tatu bagged Favorite Pop Act and Breakthrough Artist, respectively.

American multi-platinum megastar Mariah Carey made a surprise appearance and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award. Carey said she was honored by her Asian fans - though added that the region's continuing bird flu outbreak had made her think twice about coming.

``But the show must go on,'' she said.

Ten Asian countries and territories have been hit by the flu - but not Singapore.

At press conferences before the show, visiting stars took the opportunity to weigh in on Janet Jackson's recent breast-baring incident at the Super Bowl football championship in the United States.

Stacie Orrico, whose self-titled album made No. 5 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Christian Albums list this month, told reporters at a news conference that she considered the stunt ``unnecessary.''

``I definitely don't think that she's a good example,'' said the 17-year-old singer from Nashville, Tennessee.

Orrico, wearing a loose, long-sleeved white shirt and jeans, said she also doesn't approve of the revealing styles sported by Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

``The reason that I don't dress trashy is that I'm trying to set an example for little girls,'' Orrico said. ``From the time they're 7 or 8 years old, (girls) are being taught that the only thing that makes them special and beautiful is their sexuality, and I think that's wrong.''

At a separate news conference, British boy band Blue accused the media of blowing the Jackson incident out of proportion.

``You lot lap it up, that's why they do it, because you lot write about it and it makes front-page news in every ... country,'' said Duncan James, one of Blue's four singers. ``But then you're promoting it!'' AP
