HK pop star's driver jailed for lying in crash
2002-05-08
HONG KONG - A Hong Kong court sentenced the former chauffeur of pop star Nicholas Tse to four months jail on Wednesday for trying to shoulder the blame after the singer crashed his Ferrari. Shing Kwok-ting, 34, was sentenced for conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice, a spokeswoman for the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) said. Shing pleaded guilty in the Western Magistracy on April 24 to falsely claiming he had been at the wheel. "Tse has not been charged and investigations were still ongoing," a ICAC spokeswoman said. She declined to give any further details. News of the accident and pictures of Tse's mangled black Ferrari F360 Modena on a busy Central roadway hogged the local media spotlight for weeks, as the crash quickly followed reports of Tse's highly publicised break-up with Chinese pop diva Faye Wong. The car crashed into a road barricade near Hong Kong government offices on March 23. No one was injured. Prosecutors said in documents filed with the court that Tse had been driving and phoned Shing just before dawn to tell him about the crash. Shing told the singer to leave the scene of the accident, they said. The chauffeur then rushed to the crash site and said in a police statement that he had been driving and lost control of the car. A recent ICAC statement described Shing as being "formerly employed" by Emperor Entertainment Ltd, which operates Tse's record label, and said his job was to transport Tse and other Emperor artists to and from their residences and work places. Emperor Entertainment is part of Emperor Entertainment Group Ltd.
