Hong Kong court convicts popstar Tse and cop
2002-10-02
HONG KONG - A Hong Kong court convicted popstar Nicholas Tse on Wednesday of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by allowing his chauffeur to falsely take the blame after crashing his Ferrari himself."The agreement and the intention constitute perversion of the course of justice," Magistrate Allan James Wyeth told the Western Magistracy court. As Wyeth delivered his judgement, Tse's mother who was in the courtroom burst into tears. Tse, dubbed Hong Kong's "bad boy of pop," appeared distraught. The trial has put the young singer under an intense media spotlight. Hordes of reporters and fans had turned up hoping to catch a glimpse of the star as he walked into court each morning with his parents and aides. Tse, 22, will be sentenced on October 16 along with policeman Lau Chi-wai, 28, who was convicted of the same charge. Lau handled the crash report. Wyeth said the sentence would likely be imprisonment but said he would consider alternatives. Both men were remanded. The two had pleaded not guilty and the offence carries no fixed penalty. Prosecutors had said that Tse crashed his black Ferrari at around dawn on March 23, but then walked away and allowed his chauffeur Shing Kwok-ting to take the blame for the accident. No one was injured in the crash. In May, Shing was sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to falsely claiming he had been driving the car at the time of the crash. (Reuters)
