Hong Kong pop star Tse fined, suspended from driving
2002-10-31
HONG KONG - Hong Kong's pop star Nicholas Tse was fined for speeding on Thursday and suspended from driving for a year -- just weeks after he was found guilty of perverting the course of justice.A local magistrates' court fined the 22-year-old singer HK$7,000 (US$897) and suspended his driving licence for 12 months, a court official said. Tse had pleaded guilty to driving at 156 km per hour (98 mph) on a highway with a speed limit of 100 kph on May 27, and at 133 kph on another highway with a speed limit of 80 kph on May 16. Earlier this month, another magistrates' court convicted Tse of conspiring to pervert the course of justice when he allowed his chauffeur to take the blame for crashing his Ferrari in March. Tse had been driving at the time. He was remanded for two weeks before being sentenced to 240 hours of community service. The sentence drew harsh criticism from lawyers, social workers and lawmakers, who said it was too lenient. The Justice Department subsequently asked the judge to review the sentence, saying it was not tough enough. The review has been scheduled for November 8. (Reuters)
