He won distinction in the 1920s for developing a theory of nuclear fission, which led to the discovery of a new chemical element.
Born in Guangdong, Wu grew up in China and studied at Nankai University and the University of Michigan.
He taught at the National Peking University from 1934 to 1946 and served as a visiting professor at the University of Michigan and New York University.He headed the theoretical physics section of the National Reserach Council of Canada from 1949 to 1963 and later became a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University in the US.Before returning to Taiwan in 1978, Wu was a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and the State University of New York in Buffalo.
