Chinese music rocking to a new beat

Freeman's tight funk rock set was intense and refreshing. After two Hokkien and Mandarin songs, they were joined on stage by comedian MC King who struck a fantastic rapport with the fans. Radio Heart DJ Lin Youfa was another guest, who with the help of Lighthouse, really worked up the enthusiastic crowd.V's displayed strong songwriting and good musicianship. The highlight of their set was when their drummer, who is a Malay, sang Chang Chen Yue's huge hit 'Ai Zhi Chu Ti Yan'. Members from Lighthouse joined V's on stage for the rousing number which had the crowd on their feet.Most of the bands sounded raw and the sound system could have been better but the potential is plain for all to see. The concert ended earlier than scheduled with crowd favorite Retro Groove returning to the stage for a second time to close the show. Amy Yuen, music director of Radio Heart, expressed in closing: "The concert was a success and everyone enjoyed themselves. Maybe we'll do another one to celebrate the new Millennium." E-online
