TAIPEI - Taiwan's international class movie director Hou Hsiao-hsien on Saturday won for himself another best director award during the 43rd Asia-Pacific Film Festival, the Asian version of the U.S. Oscar Award.

The 51-year-old director captured the title for his movie ``Flowers of Shanghai,'' which tells of the lives and intrigues of three prostitutes in the turn of the 19th Century Shanghai in China.

Hou established himself as a leading figure of Taiwan's New Wave Cinema in the last decade, and won his international fame through his ``A City of Sadness'' for which he was awarded the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in 1989.

Indonesia's ``Leaf of a Pillow,'' was crowned the best picture during the award ceremony.

Christine Hakim, producer and leading actress, took the best actress title for her role in ``Leaf of a Pillow'' which tells of the rough and tumble daily life of three young homeless kids battling to survive in the streets.

Best actor went to Malaysia's Khalid Salleh for his role in Jogho, a film about a young bull fighter who left Malaysia to join his elder brother in southern Thailand.

Japan's Kiichi Nakai took the best supporting actor award for his role in ``Begging for Love,'' while Sumiko Fuji won the best supporting actress award through her movie ``The Geisha House.''

    Taiwan's ``Bad Girl Trilogy, Thailand's ``Who's running,'' Australia's ``Amy,'' won the Special Jury Awards.

The film festival was held alongside with Taiwan's 35th Golden Horse Award ceremony, during which Taiwan-invested American film ``Xiu Xiu The Sent Down Girl'' was the biggest winner, scoring seven of the 11-nominated awards, including the best picture, best director, best actor and best actress.

The movie, director by Shanghai-born Chinese American actress-turned director Joan Chen, is about a young Chinese girl sent to serve in the remote Mongolian countryside during the Cultural Revolution in mainland China.

It was Chen's first directoral attempt and 17-year-old leading actress Lulu Li's first movie which won for her the first best actress title.

Best actor Lopsang was an experienced actor originating from mainland China.

Hong Kong's ``City of Glass,'' nominated for 11 awards, including the best picture, best director and best actor, suffered a setback, winning only four smaller awards, including the best original screeplay, best cinematography, best sound effect and best editing.

Best supporting actor went to Hong Kong's Eric Tsang for his homosexual role in the movie ``Hold You Tight,'' while supporting actress went to Taiwan-born Shu Qi for the Hong Kong-produced ``Portland Street Blues.''

Taiwan's Golden Horse Award film festival accepts entries of both Taiwan and Hong Kong's films. [Reuters]
