1999-11-01
BEIJING - China's parliament appointed state Vice-President Hu Jintao on Sunday to the post of vice chairman of the state central military commission, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday. The appointment of the civilian Hu, 56, to the state military body follows his elevation in September to the vice-chairmanship of the central military commission. Hu is widely thought to be undergoing grooming as the successor to President and Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin, who heads both the state and party central military commissions. The appointment of Hu, who is a member of the Communist Party's powerful politburo standing committee, was decided by the top committee of China's parliament, Xinhua said.
