BEIJING - Chinese private business heroes are now eligible for the award of "model and advanced worker," Xinhua news agency said of a commendation previously confined to the proletariat.

"We make this policy in line with the spirit of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China," Zhang Junjiu, vice president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, was quoted as saying.

At that 2002 meeting, China added to its constitution former president Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" theory that cracked open the party doors to private entrepreneurs.

Late paramount leader Deng Xiaping, who famously declared "to get rich is glorious," paved the way for that change when he freed China from the shackles of central economic planning more than two decades ago.

"Commending national model and advanced workers is 'a major event' of China's political life," State Council member Hua Jianmin was quoted as saying at a Monday meeting in Beijing on selecting the nation's paragons of labour.

Exhibitions celebrating model workers in Beijing and around the country have always depicted the likes of bus conductors, plumbers, miners and other employees of the state sector.

Whether any capitalists made the cut this year will be seen on May 1, International Labour Day, when the names of the latest 3,000 national model and advanced workers will be announced, Xinhua said.
