TAIPEI (AFP) - Hong Kong director Peter Chan's historic epic "The Warlords" leads nominations for this year's Golden Horse Film Awards, considered the Chinese-language "Oscars", organisers announced Thursday.

"The Warlords" is nominated in 12 categories, including the coveted best director and best film, for the 45th ceremony on December 6 in central Taichung city.

The film features Chinese-language cinema's biggest names including Hong Kong actor Andy Lau, Taiwanese-Japanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro and China's kung fu star Jet Li.

Li is vying for best leading actor against Hong Kong's Louis Koo (Run Papa Run) China's Zhang Hanyu (The Assembly) and Liao Fan, also of China (Ocean Flame).

China's Monica Mok of "Ocean Flame" -- an erotic love story between an innocent girl and a rogue set in Hong Kong -- is up for best leading actress against Karena Lam (Claustrophobia) and Prudence Liew (True Women for Sale) from Hong Kong and Taiwanese-French Sandrine Pinna (Miao Miao).

Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng's hit movie "Cape No. 7," which became the best selling film here for 20 years, raking some 400 million Taiwan dollars (12.12 million US) since its August opening, follows closely with nine nominations, including best film and best director.

The film, a romance between a Taiwanese band player and a Japanese publicist set in Taiwan's scenic southern Kenting area, earned Wei a nod for a special Taiwanese filmmaker of the year award.

Taiwan-based Japanese actress Chie Tanaka, who played the female lead in "Cape No. 7", is nominated for the best newcomer award.

Also nominated for best film are "Ocean Flame," "The Assembly" and "Orz Boys."

For the best director prize, Taiwan's actress-turned-director Sylvia Chang (Run Papa Run) and Hong Kong's Ho Cheung Ping (Trivial Matters) will challenge the acclaimed Peter Chan and the popular Wei.

The Golden Horse Awards are styled on the US Academy Awards but are decided by a jury along the lines of the Cannes film festival.
