HK's Tsang to announce bid for top job next week
2005-05-15
HONG KONG - Hong Kong's interim leader Donald Tsang is next week expected to announce his bid to become the city's next chief executive, the South China Morning Post reported on Monday.Citing an unnamed source close to Tsang, the newspaper said an announcement would come soon after May 25, the day a change to the Hong Kong chief executive's tenure is due to be passed into law. China's parliament ruled in April that the term of Hong Kong's next leader would be limited to two years, following the unexpected resignation of chief executive Tung Chee-hwa in March. A bill seeking to limit the term of the new chief executive is scheduled to be put to a vote in the Legislative Council (Legco) on May 25. Tsang has repeatedly said his foremost task was to ensure passage of the bill and has skirted questions on whether he would run in the election. Currently attending the Fortune Global Forum in Beijing, Tsang will meet Chinese President Hu Jintao late on Monday along with other officials.
