Mauresmo beats Davenport at China Open
2006-09-23
Top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo defeated Lindsay Davenport 6-4, 6-3 Friday to advance to the China Open semifinals and end a nine-match losing streak against the former No. 1. Mauresmo won 74 percent of her first serves to overpower Davenport for the first time since beating the American in the final of the 2000 Sydney International. She is now 4-12 against Davenport in her career. "It was frustrating to have lost so many times in a row," Mauresmo said. "Tonight I really took control of the game; it was a nice reversal." Said Davenport: "It was kind of weird to have won so many times against her. I'd like to have played better and made fewer errors. I have great respect for her. She has had a great year; she's the No. 1 player in the world for a reason." Mauresmo next meets sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic, who rallied to beat Nadia Petrova 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. "It's my goal to be in the top 10," she said. "If you want to be the best player, you should beat the top players. I'm young and I have many things to improve. I'm looking forward to the semifinals tomorrow; I'll try to play my best." Second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova needed three sets to defeat Li Na, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Kuznetsova, winner of last week's Wismilak International, will play wild-card Peng Shuai, who advanced with a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 win over Ai Sugiyama.
