BERLIN - Western and Asian cultures clash in Stanley Kwan's film ``The Island Tales,'' about four characters from different backgrounds trapped on a quarantined island near Hong Kong.

The film premiered Friday at the Berlin Film Festival.

The story focuses on a Japanese journalist recovering from tuberculosis, a glamorous American-born Chinese banker (Lee, Michelle ), a young Tokyo actor and a middle-aged Chinese woman (Hsu Chi ) who came to the island to indulge her love of photography.

Visiting the island to get away from things, the four discover they cannot escape the island after the government quarantines it as a suspected source of a deadly plague.

Isolated from the rest of the world, frustrated from their attempts to overcome bureaucratic red tape, and facing the prospect of possible death from the plague, the characters are forced to look at themselves and their world afresh.

``Although this is a film about Hong Kong, I wanted to inject my own themes into it like loneliness and harmony,'' Kwan said after the world premiere in Berlin.

``I wanted to try different forms and different formats,'' he said of the film's often unusual cinematic techniques.

``Sometimes you have difficulty imagining what the final process will be.''
