Wen Ho Lee Deceived His Colleagues, Washington Post Reports
1999-12-23
Washington - Wen Ho Lee, the former Los Alamos scientist indicted for mishandling nuclear weapons secrets, went to great lengths to disguise his reasons for downloading classified material, the Washington Post reported, citing a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent. According to a transcript of a court hearing obtained by the Post, the agent testified last week that Lee persuaded a colleague to show him how to use his computer to transfer classified information to magnetic tapes by saying he was putting together a resume. The agent said Lee's downloading of data matches records in a personal notebook found during a search of his home last April, though Lee's supporters deny he mishandled the information and have said he downloaded the secret material only to work on it at an unclassified workstation, the newspaper said. Lee and his wife, Sylvia, filed suit in U.S. District Court alleging that the FBI, Department of Justice and Department of Energy violated federal law by leaking personal and confidential information about them to the media.
