Taiwan's Lee Congratulates Chen, Establishes Transition Team
2000-03-20
Taipei - Taiwan President Lee Teng- hui, the island's leader for 12 years, congratulated opposition presidential candidate Chen Shui-bian on his victory and said he will establish a transition team to prepare for the May 20 transfer of power, Bloomberg reported. In a statement, Lee congratulated Chen and his running mate, Annette Lu, members of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party. The DPP defeated Lee's handpicked successor, Vice President Lien Chan. Lee said he will ``immediately establish a transitional task force and, according to relevant rules and regulations, cooperate with the president-elect to coordinate and carry out planning of transitional matters.'' Chen's victory marks the first time in Chinese history that a national ruling group has been defeated in a democratic election by a challenger. Lee himself was the first president of Taiwan to win the job in a democratic election when he outpolled a DPP challenger in 1996. After Chen's victory last night, Lee said he met separately with Lien, Lien running mate and Premier Vincent Siew, Presidential Office chief Ding Mou-shih, National Security Council Secretary-General Yin Tsung-wen, Minister of National Defense Tang Fei, the island's top general, Tang Yao-ming, and Nationalist Party Secretary-General Huang Kun-huei. ``The maintenance of national security and the protection of the people's rights and interests are the important goals of the ruling party,'' he said. ``And therefore the government and related institutions must make the utmost effort to deal properly with these matters.''
